There is definitely a growing preference for using essential oils over synthetic fragrances, with many reasons contributing to the belief that essential oils are a better choice for candles: Something I have always advocated and here are some of my reasons for that belief.
Essential oils are extracted from natures sources, such as flowers, herbs, fruits and barks. Having an authentic aroma many people prefer this to a synthetic aroma. The scents produced by essential oils can evoke a sense of calm, relaxation, or rejuvenation, depending on the specific oil used. Synthetic fragrances, on the other hand, are created through artificial means and may lack the complexity and depth of natural essential oils.
Essential oils have been used throughout history for their therapeutic properties. When used in candles, they can impart these benefits through aromatherapy. Different essential oils have distinct effects on mood and well-being. For example, lavender and chamomile essential oils have always with associated with relaxation and stress relief, while citrus oils such as bergamot and petitgrain are more associated with an energizing and uplifting effect. Synthetic fragrances do not have the same therapeutic qualities as essential oils
Some synthetic fragrances used in candles contain a variety of chemicals, such as phthalates, parabens, and synthetic musk. These chemicals can contain potential allergens or irritants, especially for individuals with sensitivities or respiratory conditions. In contrast, essential oils are natural and derived from plant materials, making them a chemical-free and a more non-toxic option for fragrance, whether that be in skincare, perfumes or as in this particular case, candles. As a clinical aromatherapist of thirty years I have wide ranging experience and passion for customising and personalizing aromatherapy blends. The use of essential oils offer a wide range of options for creating an individual and beneficial blend. This creative aspect is often limited with synthetic fragrances, which are mass-produced and standardized. Good practice using essential oils in candles requires careful consideration and correct dilution ensuring safety. Some essential oils have specific safety guidelines, and they should be used responsibly to prevent any potential risks.
Synthetic fragrances are typically derived from petrochemicals, which are non-renewable resources. The extraction and manufacturing processes for synthetic fragrances can also have negative environmental impacts. Essential oils, on the other hand, are obtained from renewable plant sources through processes like steam distillation or cold-pressing. Using essential oils in candles can be seen as a more eco-friendly choice.
It is my personal consideration and preference that essential oils are a better option for candles due to their natural, authentic aroma, therapeutic benefits, non-toxic nature, environmental considerations, and custom blending possibilities. They provide a more holistic and enjoyable candle experience when looking for a natural and mindful approach to fragrance. Confession time.....I am very bias towards essential oils, they are my passion!
